A Heartbreaking Email

I received this email a few days ago, and it broke my heart.

I thought about it for a while, debating whether to publish it or not.

Eventually, I decided to publish it (in anonymous form), so that people could get a first-hand account about what audio + text + sync mean to people with special needs and reading disabilities, especially kids.

(And, yes, publishers, I am looking at you.)

Good morning,

I'm NAME REDACTED, a student in Medical School at ITALIAN CITY REDACTED, my sister is a 12 years old girl with cerebral palsy.

My sister is starting reading (she recognizes letters and syllables), but she struggles to understand the meaning of the phrase she has just read (clearly, just in her head, since she can communicate only using signs and several helper apps on her iPad).

Hence, I am looking for a hybrid between an ebook and an audiobook, allowing her to follow the text along the audio narration. (We use TTS on ebooks, mostly PDF files... however the quality is not great.) Here you [ReadBeyond] come into play!!

I downloaded your app and I looked at the list of your Audio-eBooks and I noticed that you do not have much choice, especially for kids.

• Are you going to publish more titles?

• Are there other Audio-eBooks (possibly from other providers) to be used in your app?

• Would you recommend other resources which I might search for?

Sono NOME COGNOME, una studentessa di medicina e chirurgia a CITTÀ, e sorella di una bambina di 12 anni affetta da paralisi cerebrale infantile.

La mia sorellina sta imparando a leggere (riconosce sillabe e parole), ma per lei é ancora difficile comprendere il significato di una frase che legge (ovviamente solo a mente, in quanto la sua capacitá di comunicare é esclusivamente con la mimica e tramite diverse applicazioni di comunicazione sul suo iPad).

Quello che sto cercando é quindi una combinazione di ebook e audiolibro, che le permetta di seguire il testo, mentre peró una voce lo legge. (Stiamo giá usando TTS su ebook principalmente in pdf..ma la qualitá non é cosí eccezionale..). Ed Ecco qui che entrate in gioco voi!!

Ho scaricato la vostra app e poi ho dato un'occhiata all'elenco dei vostri libri e ho visto che non avete moltissima scelta e soprattutto le opzioni per bambini sono un po'limitate.

• Avete intenzione di aumentare la vostra biblioteca?

• ci sono altri libri (anche da altre risorse) che si possono aprire con la vostra app?

• avete altrimenti altre risorse da consigliarmi e su cui possiamo indirizzarci?
